Noble Ancestors - Intro Post

As I mentioned in an earlier post, we can trace my 9th great-grandmother Elizabeth Alsop back further to King Edward I of England. So, then, from the charts below, we can see that King Edward I is my 22nd great-grandfather. Each generation farther back can accurately chronicle another generation of royal ancestors, as far as historians and the general consensus are aware.

In the lineages below, I have listed Elizabeth back to Edward I. Then, Edward I back to William the Conqueror and Matilda of Flanders. Then, Matilda back to Alfred the Great. These lines are the most accurate to my knowledge.

I've also included a line from William I back to Rollo, and a line of Baldwin II to Charlemagne. As far as I am aware these two are pretty solid. A line from Geoffrey Plantagenet to Charlemagne is included, although a portion of this has been disputed. Finally, I have listed Alfred the Great back to Cerdic of Wessex. Much of this is incomplete, and disputed.

Cerdic and Charlemagne are about as far back in history as I have been able to trace so far, although there are many different lines I have yet to research. As you can see below, one line from William I (the Conqueror) can be traced back a few generations to Rollo, leader of the Normans, or Vikings. Another line, from William's wife Matilda can be traced back to Charlemagne, the Holy Roman Emperor. Therefore, we Baldwins are direct descendants of all of these people, and can claim them as great-grandparents to some number or another. The claim to Cerdic of Wessex as family, however, is still heavily up for debate!

Charts below read, generally, from more recent times at the bottom, to ancient times near the top. As always the names in bold indicate the lines of descent. Take a look:

WOW, THAT'S CRAZY!

In my "Noble Ancestors" posts I will post short informational blurbs, not only about famous Counts and Dukes and other titled bigwigs, but also royalty like Kings or Queens. But for simplicity's sake I will title these all under the same series of posts named "Noble Ancestors". They will be labeled as such for easy searching as the blog grows, like my "Famous Cousins" posts. These "Noble Ancestors" posts will also include great-uncles and aunts if interesting.
